JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com – In association with the American Indonesian Exchange Foundation (Aminef), PT Freeport Indonesia is putting available scholarships for Papua’s high achievers  to study at Community Colleges in the United States.

Students from Papua and West Papua will have the chance to be enlisted as students at a number of American universities for two semesters. The program is endorsed with a US$ 1 million educational fund for the period 2016-2020.

Vice President Corporate Communications PT Freeport Indonesia, Riza Pratama, is looking forward to seeing the students learn diverse educational topics like agriculture, technical engineering, information technology, tourism like hotel management etc.

“The Scholarship Program will give recipients a return ticket to the US, living expenses, health programs and cultural activities,” Riza said in a written statement on Tuesday (7/25)

Aminef has been partnering with Freeport from 1998 to 2016. During this period, 62 students from Papua and East Indonesia have been to the States to enjoy free education.

One of the scholarship recipients was Lazarus Bugaleng, the first Amungme to earn a degree in mining and has now returned to Papua. It is his wish that the scholarship programs will be made available to more students from Papua and West Papua.

"I sincerely hope more students like me will get the same chance. It will enable us to exchange thoughts, ideas or knowledge in order to bring our human resources to higher levels,” Lazarus said.
