Green Mission, A Mission to Conserve Biodiversity

National Love Flora and Fauna Day presents an occasion to raise awareness and foster love of flora and fauna towards the conservation of biodiversity. 

PT Freeport Indonesia through its Environmental Department held a talk show and ornamental plant contest at the Kuala Kencana shopping center atrium on Friday, 27 October. The activity adopted the theme “Green Mission by Save Biodiversity” to campaign among the public for heartfelt and sincere conservation of biodiversity. The event was held to commemorate Love Flora and Fauna Day, which falls on every 5 November. On that day an activity by PTFI’s environmental department and the Natural Resources Conservation Center (BBKSDA) is scheduled to be held, to release wildlife into their natural habitat. 

Friday’s activity was attended by PTFI Environmental General Superintendent Robert Sarwom, head of the Timika chapter of Papua BBKSDA Bambang H Lakuy, Timika Class I Agricultural Quarantine Station Operational Services Subsection Chief Drh Adi Ardiansyah, PTFI Environmental Department Lowland Biodiversity Superintendent Tumpal Sinaga, USAID Lestari Landscape Communication & Advocacy Specialist Rini Sulistyawati, Mimika Police Criminal Investigation Operations Chief Inspector First Class Rannu SH, and members of animal lovers communities such as Papua Animal Care (PANIC), Mimika Reptile Lovers (MIROR), and Reptile Timika Community (RTC).

Robert Sarwom said, “Through this activity we endeavor together to conserve the flora and fauna existing in our environment, specifically in Timika and Papua, to ensure they are not endangered. This activity is also a drive to instill in us awareness and love for all flora and fauna towards their conservation in Indonesia.”

During the talk show, all participants were encouraged to submit questions about environmental conservation, and conservation of flora and fauna. Information sources from Environmental Department, BBKSDA, the Agricultural Quarantine Station and USAID Lestari spoke by turns on detailed efforts made for environmental conservation, including protection of flora and fauna in Timika – Papua.
